SACRAMENTO – The Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs (APAPA) is pleased to announce that APAPA National President Mary Yin Liu has recently been recognized as Assembly District 9th (AD 9th) Woman of the Year, which is celebrated as part of Women’s History Month in March. Assemblyman Cooper (D-Elk Grove) represents AD 9, which includes communities of Sacramento, Elk Grove, Lodi, and Galt and has selected Mary Yin Liu for the coveted honor.

Mary and her husband Harris are lifelong entrepreneurs and successful franchisees in Sacramento, Solano, and Yolo Counties. Immigrants from Mainland China and Taiwan, her parents, CC and Regina Yin, opened their first McDonald’s Restaurant in Oakland. Three decades later, the family’s empire has expanded to three counties, including more than 21 restaurants. Their team members donate over 18,000 meals a year to local shelters supporting families in need.

Mary is a current member and past president of a larger association of McDonald’s Owner/Operators which supports local schools, first responders, and other nonprofit organizations. Through her leadership with Ronald McDonald House Charities over the past decade, Mary has partnered with over a dozen nonprofit organizations in Northern California to raise more than a million dollars in scholarship funds for local students.

“Mary and her McDonald’s team have also volunteered countless hours supporting our efforts in bringing school supplies to children in my district in the “Backpacks for Kids” program and joins us to help local families at the annual “Turkey Give-Away” holiday program, and that’s just a few examples of her commitment to our community,” said Assemblyman Cooper.  “Never wanting to be in the spotlight, Mary gives and doesn’t expect anything in return which is why I am so very proud to recognize her as my district Woman of the Year.”

As National President of APAPA, Mary helped to coordinate and organize 21 Unity Against Hate rallies across the country last year to advocate against rising Asian hate crimes. She also supported the expansion of the APAPA internship program to over 250+ student interns each year.

“I am so honored to receive this recognition from Assemblyman Cooper, who is not only a well-respected lawmaker in Sacramento, but is always committed to serving others and keeping our community safe,” said Liu.
